The Muscle You’re Probably Forgetting to Train for Better Running (Especially After 35)
May 26, 2025
Quick - What is the main muscle group that propels you forward when running? Not your quadriceps, glutes, or hamstrings... it is your calf muscles! It is important to train your calf muscles for running, especially after the age of 35 when we tend to lose mass there quickly. If you are having vague tightness in your calf after long runs or have occasional sharp pain in your calf with speedwork you would likely benefit from assessing your calf strength. Can you do these benchmark tests for a runner’s calves?
- 20 single leg heel raises with your knee locked out straight and a metronome set to 30 beats per minute (up on the first beat, down on the second)
- Hop on one leg in place for 45 seconds staying springy at the ankle and not losing height
If you are falling short on these tests then you are likely not running as well as you can! Do you want to have us help with assessing your calf strength or your running form?
